Drew Barrymore, a Hollywood super star and film producer has become Ambassador Against Hunger for World Food Programme (WFP). “WFP works to stop Hunger. Among the Millennium Development Goals which the United Nations has set for the 21st century, halving the proportion of hungry people in the world is top of the list. Whether refugees are fleeing war or drought is destroying farmland, hunger is often the first emergency. The hungry look to WFP for the first response. In 2006, the agency's food assistance reached 63.4 million people caught in the world's ever-widening net of humanitarian disasters.”
The global community has adequate food supply to feed the world’s hunger but poverty, geo-politics and logistic decelerate this worthy goal. To end hunger there must be a serious and unwavering commitment by the people, institutions and governments around the world.
Women and children, refugees and people at conflict and war-torn areas are those that are most vulnerable to hunger. The poor of the world cannot afford three basic balanced-square meals.
Barrymore supported WFP project in America and Kenya, where she has visited numerous times and partake in feeding the school children.
By stepping to this new role, Drew Barrymore has brought awareness and education on the fight against hunger. People are becoming aware that hunger is universal and to win the battle against it, poverty must be arrested.
Recently in Washington D.C., Drew Barrymore joined Tergat and Josette Sheeran (WFP’s Executive Director) to raise awareness about school feeding – and also advocate for passage of draft legislation in the US Congress that would amplify and recurred funding for US-supported school feeding programmes.
For her dedication to this struggle against hunger and feeding the children, the Management and Staff of Afripol chose Drew Barrymore as the PERSON OF THE MONTH.
