George Soros - philanthropist, financier and philosopher. Soros is the founder and chairman of the Open Society Institute and the Soros foundations network. He is also the chairman of Soros Fund Management LLC. Soros is a billionaire, who has dedicated his wealth for amelioration of human condition especially among the poor and less privilege of our world.
In this era of globalization, he is a force to reckon with and is in the vanguard of global development and human advancement with regards to fairness, equity and justice. His Open Society Institute authors Malawi: Justice Sector and the Rule of Law which “provides a comprehensive audit of the country's performance against African and international standards that seek to improve access to justice and the upholding of the rule of law. It also puts forward practical recommendations, calling on the government to take steps to ensure further consolidation of changes that have taken place since the 1994 democratic Constitution.”
Recently, Billionaire financier George Soros pledged $50 million to aid the United Nations sponsored Millennium Villages project which is to fight penury poverty and Aids in Africa. The Millennium Villages project is providing bed nets that will enhanced the control of the malaria carrying mosquitoes and provide fertilizers to improve soil for optimum farming yield .“This is a very important project. It’s meant to serve as a prototype that can be scaled up. If it’s successful, it can really be scaled up and make a major impact on rural poverty in Africa,” Soros said. UN’s Millennium Development Goal is to half extreme poverty by 2015.
“George Soros was born in Budapest, Hungary on August 12, 1930. He survived the Nazi occupation of Budapest and left communist Hungary in 1947 for England, where he graduated from the London School of Economics (LSE). While a student at LSE, Soros became familiar with the work of the philosopher Karl Popper, who had a profound influence on his thinking and later on his professional and philanthropic activities.”
