Philip Emeagwali on Nigerian stamp
Often called one of the fathers of the Internet, the Nigerian-born Emeagwali survived civil war as a teenager to become a computer scientist and geologist in the U.S. His greatest accomplishment was the work he did in 1987, when he used the Connection Machine to program thousands of computers to talk to one another to correctly analyze the amount of oil petroleum fields, a record-breaking discovery that was a precursor to the Internet. He received the Gordon Bell Prize in 1989 for his work. (emeagwali.com)
